Welcome to the New Mitchell Point Tunnel

UPDATE: THE MITCHELL POINT TUNNEL IS OPEN

top image of Mitchell Point Tunnel of 1920. Bottom image of Mitchell Point Tunnel 2024The unveiling of the tunnel was a significant milestone toward the decades-long vision to reconnect the original “King of Roads,” the 73-mile continuous route through the Columbia River Gorge from Troutdale to The Dalles. The iconic Mitchell Point Tunnel was a highlight of the original Historic Highway, but the construction of Interstate 84 destroyed the tunnel.
In spring of 2021, the Oregon Department of Transportation broke ground on a new tunnel at Mitchell Point. It is a 655-foot tunnel with five arched windows, reminiscent of the original tunnel. It is scheduled to open late 2024 or early 2025 when the final pieces of infrastructure are complete.
Features
  • Five arched windows with expansive views of the Columbia River.
  • Hand placed stone masonry wall.
  • Stone masonry around the tunnel entrances.
  • A plaza with picnic tables and overlook and expanded restroom at the westside trailhead.
  • An overlook on the east side.

Before it was blown up to build Interstate 84, the Mitchell Point Tunnel was one of the largest draws for travelers of the Scenic Columbia River Highway. See how we hope to reclaim that experience for trail users once again. Join us and filmmakers, A Path Less Pedaled, as they take us back in time to our nation’s first scenic highway-and give us a glimpse into what the future holds for this pinnacle of early 20th century rural highway design.

When complete, this route will draw visitors from around the globe to experience the spectacular Columbia River Gorge the way it was meant to be seen — from beautiful vistas, next to cascading waterfalls and inside basalt tunnels — all while visiting welcoming towns along the way.

In July, 2015, the Oregon Department of Transportation debuted six short films at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. The films were developed to highlight the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail and the benefits of connecting the final 10 miles of Historic Highway State Trail into Hood River.
