Cabin Creek Falls on this Waterfall Wednesday

With winter and spring come winter storms and snow pack melt, supplying Oregon scenic rivers the water needed to create our wildly beautiful and renowned waterfalls. And it’s certainly not too early to start planning your Oregon vacation that should involve chasing waterfalls. Come feel the mist of Oregon waterfalls on your face! If you’re up to the chase I can almost guarantee you’ll discover at least 10 waterfalls in one day of easy exploring the Columbia River Gorge waterfalls. Four alone on the the trail to Cabin Creek Falls.

Cabin Creek Falls is the second waterfall you’ll encounter along the Mt. Defiance Trail from Starvation Creek Falls. Cascading from a narrow crack in the cliff face Cabin Creek makes a brief stop on a small ledge before dropping again toward the trail, where it can be viewed from just about 50 feet away, an easy and rewarding sight, especially when the trees are bare and visibility is at its best. As summer progresses, the creek’s flow gradually slows, fed less by spring runoff and seasonal rainfall. Now is the best time to visit, when the creek still flows steadily and the surrounding landscape is at its most vibrant.

Start at Starvation Creek State Park. From the Old Parkdale Inn head down to Hood River and Interstate 84. Travel west to Exit 51, Wyeth, and get back on the interstate east towards Starvation Creek State Park exit. There isn’t a west bound exit. The trail to Cabin Creek Falls starts here.

This 1.9-mile out-and-back trail near Cascade Locks, Oregon is a section of the soon to be complete Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. It’s considered an easy route and takes an average of 46 min to complete. This is a very popular area for running and walking, so you’ll likely encounter other people while exploring.
